On August 4th, 2017 the $246,000,000 Mitchell Freeway extension was officially opened by the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, WA Premier Mark McGowan, Member for Pearce Christian Porter, Member for Moore Ian Goodenough and a number of other politicians and dignitaries.

The 6 kilometre extension took the final freeway exit from Burns Beach Road to Hester Avenue, cutting around 5 minutes from the journey from Perth to Lancelin and beyond.

The Hester Avenue exit is the first to use roundabouts instead of traffic lights to control the flow of traffic.  Member for Pearce, Christian Porter, confirmed that he would be pushing for further funding to extend the freeway a similar distance and hopes that good news may come within the next 12 months.
